Through the study group, I have now been given the task of teaching a month long unit about the Holocaust. I also must do an opinionated type essay about the Einsatzgruppen. This is terrible, and I hate reading and writing and talking about this, but... I read something in a book recently about the Einsatzgruppen... It said something along the lines of "Reading about this is painful, but no where near as painful as what those people who were murdered had to go through..." And I have to say I agree with that. Someone in my study group came up to me the other day and told me this, "Didn't you know that it wasn't Hitler's intent to kill the Jews? He only wanted them out of Germany..." When I heard this, I wanted to scream, I wanted to hit this ignorant idiot in the face. Instead I answered, cooly, "Well, if that's what you believe, go ahead. It isn't accurate, unfortunatley. If you don't believe me, read Hitler's Mein Kamph, and he himself will tell you his intent with the Jews." He said nothing to this, for which I am glad. I heard some stories from a great-aunt who actually survived the Holocaust. She survived Auschwitz, and to actually hear my realtive describe these atrocities to me mad me want to vomit. The way she spoke of the horrors she saw was so jaded, in a sense. Like she was numb. She said, "I'm telling you this because I want you to make sure this never happens again." Wow, a great burden I thought, but in the end it's true. This generation, and all the ones following, need to know the truth about what happened, in order to keep the promise I made to my great-aunt. I knew a lot about it already, but I joined a History study group with some friends. We were studying WWII, and I got the subject of the Holocaust. I am hoping that through the disturbing images and text I have collected, I can change their minds. It makes me angry, sick, and utterly sad to read the things that were done to an innocent people.
