Berthe HAUT was born on March 27, 1930, in Paris; she lived at 16 impasse Gandelet (11th arr.). Transferred from the Poitiers camp to Drancy and then to Pithiviers, she was deported on September 21, 1942, on convoy 35. Her father and her older brother had been deported on convoys 2 and 3, respectively. Berthe wrote to her brother Henri and her sister Raymonde: My dear Riri and Raymonde, I hope you are being nice to Maman and Madeleine, because you know they have a lot to do. Raymonde, behave and eat well; be sure to tell Maman when you need the potty, eat everything she gives you and tell her not to cry, that Berthe will be home with all of you right away. My little Riri, be good, continue helping Maman, for her torture will soon be over. Tell Maman that I want photographs and good packages. I kiss you on both cheeks. Your sister Betty. Berthe returns to the subject of photographs in another letter to her mother, dated September 8, 1942, from Pithiviers: … you know that your little Berthe is a courageous girl and that she can take the consequences … I was very upset when I saw that I had not received a package; everyone had one but me, but I forgive you because I'm sure there is one en route. I would like photos of the whole family, even ones I've already seen. I want the one of Papa, Maman with Raymonde, the last one where she looks so cute, Madeleine in her little identity photos, darling Henri in his identity photos … photos, please, for me they are more than food. Photos, sil vous plait, they are everything to me.
