Arnold HIRSCH was born on March 23, 1927, in
Argenschwang, Germany. He was one of the 44 children from Izieu. Arnold's
parents, Max and Ida, were deported on convoy 20 of August 17, 1942. Arnold
Hirsch had a forged ID, in the name of Jean-Pierre Barreau. His best friend,
Theo (Théodor) REIS, was born on March 19, 1928, in Egelsbach,
Germany. Theo's mother, Erna, and grandmother, Johanna, interned in Rivesaltes,
were deported on convoy 19 of August 14, 1942. Arnold and Theo were deported on
convoy 73 of May 15, 1944, along with Mr.
Zlatin, the director of Izieu. This convoy transported only men. It went first
to Kovno (Kaunas) in Lithuania, where half of the convoy was taken off the
trains and rapidly wiped out by the SS. The other half of the convoy, including
the three from Izieu, was sent to Reval (Tallin) in Estonia. All but 15 of the
prisoners were killed by the SS. This picture was taken by Renée
Paillarès; her sister Paulette was a non-Jewish friend who had visited
Arnold and Theo at Izieu during the summer of 1943. |
