Anja SCHAUL was born on May 16, 1937, in Paris, where her mother, Ruth, a German and the author of children's books, had taken refuge. Her father, Hans, was first sent to the camp in Vernet and later interned by Vichy in a labor camp in North Africa. Ruth and Anja were arrested at Rosiers-sur-Loire (Maine-et-Loire) on July 15, 1942. On July 20, Ruth was deported on convoy 8, which left Angers for Auschwitz. Anja was placed in the care of a local family, and went to school in Angers. On January 27, 1944, the Gestapo came to arrest the 6-year-old child in school and transferred her to Drancy. She was deported from there on February 10, 1944, on convoy 68. All that remains of her are this photo and this letter sent to her father in October, 1942.

Les Rosiers sur Loire, 23 October 1942

My Dear Little Papa, Maman is gone. I'm living at my teacher's. I cry for Maman. I call my teacher Manette. I wrote to Madame Renault. I have a beautiful doll who sleeps. She's dressed like a Bretonne. I know how to work the TSF
[wireless] all by myself. Hugs and kisses. Annia Schaul.
