| Max (born on August 14, 1931) and Herman
TEITELBAUM (born on November 1, 1933) were born in Antwerp, the sons of
Jankiel and Sefa. They were among the 44 children arrested at the children's
home in Izieu. They were transferred to Drancy, where, like 32 of their friends
from Izieu, they were held from April 7 to April 13, 1944. They were deported
to Auschwitz on convoy 71, under the names
of Max and Armand Teitel. Their arrest and the discovery of their family's
address – either through the seizure of letters sent to them at Izieu, or
through their interrogation in Montluc or Drancy – led to the arrest of
their mother and their sister Gabrielle (born on October 2, 1927, in
Antwerp) and brother Maurice (born on November 27, 1929). From Drancy
documents, particularly the notebook that recorded all the valuables belonging
to Jews, we proved that this arrest took place in Chambéry (Savoie),
where they lived at 42 faubourg Montmélian, probably shortly before
their transfer to Drancy on April 21. The mother and the two oldest children
were deported on convoy 72 of April 29,
1944, just after the convoy that deported the younger children. They, too, were
killed at Auschwitz. In 1945 only the father of this family of six had escaped
deportation and death. |
