Annie WILLARD was born on February 22, 1928, in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin). The family settled in Nice in 1936, where Germaine, the mother of the family and a widow, ran a store called "Berceaux Alsaciens" at 23 rue de Paris. She was arrested there by the Gestapo with her three children, Annie, age 15, Claude, 20, and Huguette, 18. All four were deported on convoy 69 of March 7, 1944.
