On October 20, 1943, the Gestapo took over the family
center of La Verdière, in Marseilles, which was under the auspices of
the UGIF. Nine mothers and their 28 children were arrested. Among them were the
ARROVAS family. Shown above is the mother, Sultana, and her oldest
daughters, Esther and Victorine, who escaped the roundup. Between them is
Rachel, age 14, who was deported on October 28, 1943, on
convoy 61 with her mother and the four
youngest children (first row, left to right): Josette, age 8;
Sabeta (Sabin), 4; Germaine, 7; and Marcelle, arrested on
her 11th birthday. All the children were born in Marseilles. |
