This picture was taken in the south of.France in St-Laurent-de-Neste (Hautes-Pyrénées) in 1943, a year before the attempt of 18 Jews to cross the Pyrénées to Spain. Someone denounced them and they were arrested by the Germans at the Chaum bridge and deported. One person escaped; one was shot down in Chaum; and two survived deportation. There were seven children among the 14 who were deported and killed. Four of them are shown here: Marcel KADENSKI, age 11; Jacqueline OSMAN, 11; Simon JAKSON, 13; and his brother Louis, 7 – all born in Paris and deported on convoy 76 of June 30, 1944. In 1995 the municipality of St-Laurent-de-Neste erected a memorial with the names of the victims, to commemorate the tragedy.
