Jeanine and Arlette LELOUCH were born in France, Jeanine in Paris and Arlette in Tesse-la-Madeleine (Orne). Arlette would have celebrated her fourth birthday on October 14, 1943, but she was deported on October 7 of that year on convoy 60, along with Jeanine, who was then 6, their mother, Yvonne, their maternal grandparents, and an aunt. Their father, Elie, had been deported at the end of July on convoy 58. The family lived at 12 boulevard d'Ormesson in Enghien, near Paris.
