Clara wrote this letter from the Vél d'Hiv on July 18, 1942.

        Paris, July 18th, 1942
Dear Uncle, Aunt and Cousins,
Just two words to tell you that we were arrested on Thursday at 3:30 and brought to the Velodrome d'Hiver.
We are very wretched. People fall sick every minute; there are pregnant women, blind people... we all sleep on the ground…

Clara GARNEK was born on January 24, 1927, in Paris, where she lived at 7 cité Dupetit-Thouars (3rd arr.). She was deported on convoy 16 of August 7, 1942. Her brothers Henri, age 11, and Jean, 3, were deported on convoy 26 of August 31, 1942, with their mother. Their father had already been deported. She is shown here with her brother Henri; Jean is. in the tombstone photo.
