Jeannette Henri Louis |

Naftal PROCHOWNIK, the oldest brother in the
family, rejoined his brothers and sister at Drancy on August 15, 1942. They had
come from the Beaune-la-Rolande camp, where they had been interned after their
transfer from the Vel d'Hiv. Louis, age 13, Henri, 9, and
Jeannette, 5, were all born in Paris, where they lived at 68 impasse des
Couronnes (20th arr.). We published Naftal's story in the Memorial to
the Jews Deported from France. Here is an excerpt: For several days, I
comforted the children as best I could. A few days went by and I learned that a
convoy of children was scheduled for Germany, supposedly to rejoin their
parents. Of course, I did not believe this, because why separate them to
reunite them later? I foresaw a much more tragic fate and I wondered what I
should do: should I leave with them to protect them, or stay behind and await
my fate? I could not solve this terrible dilemma. I did not close my eyes all
night. In the morning I decided to talk frankly to little Louis and I said to
him: Look, you are going to be deported to join our parents; do you think that
all by yourself you can take care of Jeannette and Henri, or would you rather
that I came with you; in the latter case I shall have no chance of saving
anything that can be saved. He answered me: Up to now I have taken good care of
them all by myself so if you have a chance of saving yourself stay. The
three children were deported on convoy 22
of August 21, 1942. Naftal, deported later, survived to bear witness: You
who read these lines will easily understand why all the children in the world
have become my little brothers and sisters. |
