Germany needed it
for the reconciliation of Jews and
Germans who would not see the dawn of brotherhood break except in a
common struggle against fascism;
Germany needed it
for a Germany free of desire for revenge,
for a Germany now divided yet someday surely one again when through
socialism we shall win peace and the world's respect;
Germany needed it
so that many may put on the magic
spectacles of Günter Grass and again see men as they were in
that dark night, and so that Kurt-Georg Kiesinger may hide behind a
false blindman's dark glasses eyes that he has closed to all that.
And Germany needed
the hand of a woman to deliver it, for
no one asked the women who were consumed in the gas ovens and who died
in the bombings and who shrieked under torture whether they were women;
And still the mother who smiles at
the smile of her infant cannot conceive that he maybe murdered or that
he may become a murderer
That is why impelled by fifty
million corpses and by all generations yet to come, my hand struck the
face of ten million Nazis, and why the same insult and the same bruise
has marked their forehead.
