BLOCKING
A NAZI FROM THE
COMMON
MARKET
On March 30, 1970, the Süddeutsche
Zeitung, Munich's big independent daily, reported that Ernst Achenbach was
the candidate to succeed Fritz Hellwig as the German member of the Committee of
the European Economic Community (EEC) in Brussels. The paper went on to say
that Achenbach, a Free Democratic Party (FDP) member of the Bundestag, would
soon be appointed by the federal government.
I had come across
Achenbach several times during my research into Kiesinger's past. Out of my
files I drew a memorandum dated June 28, 1940, from Schlottman of the Cultural
Division of the Foreign Ministry, radio section, to Otto Abetz, the German
ambassador to Paris. The memorandum stated that the embassy secretary, Dr.
Ernst Achenbach, was to set the political policy of the department handling
German broadcasts in Occupied France.
Well, well, well. Here was
another familiar name: Dr. Gustav Sonnenhol was the head of that department.
Just a few weeks ago, the President of the Federal Republic, Gustav Heinemann,
had personally opposed his nomination as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs
because of the role he had played in 1943-44. Perhaps it
