Pierre Mathias's point of view,
expressed in a letter to Le Monde, is a good answer to the attacks and
silence of people who say they are fighting the same battle:
In a world that worships results and where
torture is always a means that justifies the end, is there still room for
conscience? Mme. B.K. is not some Fury stirring up hatred. She is the
conscience we seem to have lost. She strives to remind us that no end justifies
crime, and that crime cannot be forgotten or wiped out. Many
Resistance veterans and Jews helped me. Here are two examples:
From the
Resistance Volunteers of Saint-Die: "Mrs. K. has done what the Resistance
organizations ought to have done, or at least supported, long ago."
From a dental surgeon in Nice: "Your courage and your determination
have made many Jewish men ashamed, and me in particular. We have felt involved
in the battle you are waging, but you, a woman, have done something more. You
have acted."
I also regularly received insulting or threatening
letters. Some correspondents needed to think I am Jewish so that they could
say:
Dirty Jewess, someday someone will settle
accounts with you, and that's just what should be done. A curse on your whole
race! Or:
Your race has cost so many lives, so much
sweat, and so many miseries, in comparison to which those "extermination" camps
of yours are a joke . Every time I read one of those letters I
feel a stab in my heart, and then I clench my fists. They hurt, but they
bolster my determination even more. Here is another:
Dear Rebecca, Just a line to tell you we
[Nazis] are still around. Even though you are an Aryan, you married a kike and
so, by the rules of our gang, you are going to be exterminated.
The
Fourth Reich is at hand. The Crystal Nights and the Nuremberg Laws will soon be
here again! Twelve million slimy toads like you are going to die this time
and in our new ultra-modern ovens. Half-
