morality from the German authorities, we
demand her release from an administrative imprisonment, an imprisonment that is
entirely under the control of the executive authority. But more than this, we
deliberately ignore completely all questions of legal formalities, of who is
eligible to appeal and who is empowered to release. We turn to the German
governmental authorities and public representatives as the authorized
representatives of the Jewish people, the victims of Nazism, on the highest
plane of morality: Do justice, and in the words of the prophet Isaiah –
"Your hands are filled with blood, wash yourselves, remove the evil of your
deeds, refrain from evil, learn to do good, seek justice."
The Jewish
people shows its gratitude to its benefactors today. It is to the honor of the
Knesset that members from all branches of the House, without reference to
factional ideology, have united together, even amid the turmoil of current
serious events that occupy us today, to stop and think a bit, thanks to Beate
Klarsfeld, about from where we came and what are the principles of justice,
morality, and humanism that we carry with us, and together – members of
many factions – we presented the motion to hold this special discussion.
It is to the honor of the Knesset and of public-mindedness in Israel that one
of its members, former Supreme Court Judge Benjamin Halevi, offered his
personal guarantee for Beate Klarsfeld to the German authorities. It is to our
honor that one of our members, the lawyer Shmuel Tamir, dedicatedly took her
defense upon himself. It is to the honor of all of us that the Speaker of the
Knesset, Yisrael Yeshayahu, accepted our suggestion without delay and scheduled
the immediate opening of this special session.
CONCLUSION OF THE SPECIAL SESSION
OF
THE KNESSET
The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee
of the Knesset met today to discuss the motion for the Agenda proposed by
Member of Knesset Akiva Nof, concerning the arrest of Beate Klarsfeld in
Germany. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Committee sent the following
telegram to the German Bundestag:
"The Knesset held a special meeting
on May 2, 1974, concerning the arrest of Beate Klarsfeld, and passed the matter
on to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for further consideration. The
Committee decided at its meeting to appeal to the Bundestag of the Federal
Republic of Germany in order to procure the immediate release from prison of
Mrs. Klarsfeld and the ratification of the agreement between the Federal
Republic of Germany and France concerning judgment of Nazi criminals. The
Committee considers that it is the moral duty of the Federal Republic of
Germany to sign and ratify similar agreements concerning the trial of Nazi
criminals with other nations who were
