Babi Yar

Question:

I am researching the Babi Yar massacre on September 29, 1941 in order to assure historical accuracy in the writing of my novel. I understand that the Germans posted a notice in Kiev ordering the Jews to report to the Babi Yar ravine under the pretence of relocation when in actuality, they were being assembled to be murdered.

I'm seeking to obtain the exact wording of this notice and an English translation. I have the name of a resource; however, I have been unable to locate it. It is the following:

"Central State Archives of the October Revolution, Moscow. Fund 7021,index 65, item 5."

I would appreciate any help you could provide.

Richard J. Green answers:

Greetings,

My colleague John Drobnicki has provided the following information.

According to http://www.iisg.nl/~abb/abb_b.html#b1, the aforementioned archive is now known as Gosudarstvennyi arkhiv Rossiiskoi Federatsii (GARF) [State Archive of the Russian Federation]. The address, phone #, and an email link are on the above web page.

The Einsatzgruppen reports: selections from the dispatches of the Nazi Death Squads' campaign against the Jews July 1941- January 1943, edited by Yitzhak Arad, Shmuel Krakowski, and Shmuel Spector.

Kuznetsov's Babi Yar might even have it - although it's a "documentary novel," he was there and the book is generally considered to be reliable.
