Gustav SimonQuestion:
Andrew Mathis answers:I am one of the volunteers who answers questions for the Holocaust History Project. Simon was hanged after the war. Unfortunately, I am unable to determine at this point if he was sentenced as a war criminal at Nuremberg (doubtful) or whether his sentence was handed down by the Grand Duchy (more likely). I shall endeavor to do more thorough research and follow up this information with more data. Incidentally, my great-uncle was severely wounded defending Luxembourg at the Battle of the Bulge, but he survived. For further information on the Nazi occupation of Luxembourg, please visit this URL: http://www.holocaust-history.org/questions/luxembourg.shtml Andrew E. Mathis, Ph.D. Harry Mazal OBE answers:Two of my colleagues previously answered this question but I would like to make a few slight corrections. From:
The Encyclopedia of the Third Reich Vol. II, p. 875: "Simon, Gustav, b. Saarbrücken, August 2. 1900; d. Koblenz, April 1945. German politician. A teacher of commercial subjects, Simon joined the NSDAP in 1925. He became the full-time *Besirksleiter* (district leader) of the party in Trier-Birkenfeld in 1928, then of Koblenz-Trier in 1929. He was elected to the Reichstag in 1930 and was named Gauleiter in Koblenz- Trier-Birkenfeld in 1931 (renamed Gau Moselland in 1942). In 1940 he took over the civil administration of Luxembourg and was a Reich defense commissioner as of 1942. At the end of the war he took his own life." Yours sincerely, Harry W.
