Harry W. Mazal OBE answers:

His correct name is Elie Wiesel, PhD. He was born in the town of Sighet, Romania in 1928 and did not live in a ghetto. He was sent by the Nazis to the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944 where his father died. His mother and sister died in the gas chambers in Auschwitz.

Prof. Wiesel was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1985 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.
