Short Essay: Where to find photos of the Holocaust on the Internet

The following is not comprehensive but is intended to be a useful guide to finding photos documenting the Holocaust. It was last updated in July of 2001; so newer essays or sites will not be shown.

First, we have many essays with photos on THHP.

  • Photographs Documenting the Holocaust in Hungary(3000 words, 180 photos), by Dr. László Karsai contains numerous photos that were found after the war. Read the accompanying essay for details of the origins of these photos. Some of these photos are quite disturbing and discretion is advised

  • The Stroop Report (125 pages), Major General Jürgen Stroop, 1943. The thorough Nazi record proudly documenting the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto. Photographs at the end of the Stroop Report start at http://www.holocaust-history.org/works/stroop-report/jpg/img001.jpg. Although disturbing in content, these photos are probably not inappropriate for young readers.

  • The Dachau Gas Chambers (5000 words, 47 photos), by Harry W. Mazal OBE. A photo essay documenting facilities in the Dachau concentration camp. These photos are appropriate for young readers.

  • Der ewige Jude ("The Eternal Jew") (30,000 words, 83 images, recording), by Stig Hornshøj-Møller. Stills from the Nazi propaganda film are at: http://www.holocaust-history.org/der-ewige-jude/stills.shtml Because this film was Nazi propaganda, the photos demand the context of the essay. There is partial nudity in one picture. These photos are probably appropriate for young readers, but may require guidance as to their context.

  • See No Evil: John Ball's Blundering Air Photo Analysis (2000 words, 14 photographs), by Brian Harmon documents the blunders of Holocaust denier John Ball in his analysis of air photos. The pictures and the arguments are technical in nature, but the photos themselves are appropriate for young readers.
There are also many sites outside of THHP with photos documenting the Holocaust. Here is just some of what is available.
