War Crimes Tribunals

Introduction

Following the close of World War Two it was decided that those responsible for the reprehensible crimes against humanity must be tried and punished. This grim task, taken on by the allies, was primarily concentrated in Nuremburg Germany. This section concentrates on these tribunals, as well as others held in different locales.

NUREMBURG MILITARY TRIBUNALS

The NMT process held from October 1946 through May of 1949 focused on many of the actual perpetrators of the war crimes. The judges and prosecutors of these war criminals were exclusively American. All documents were available to both prosecutors and defense attorneys in English and German. Simultaneous translation of the entire procedure was available in both languages. The fifteen books describing this trial are known as the "green" series and will eventually appear in their totality on this web page.

THE INTERNATIONAL MILITARY TRIBUNALS

The IMT process held between November 14, 1945 and October 1, 1946 was held under the aegis of an international court with judges and prosecutors from the United States, Great Britain, the Provisional Government of France and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The process was conducted in four languages with simultaneous voice translation and documents translated into all four languages plus the language of the accused, German. As its title implies, the IMT prosecuted those major war criminals who were the leaders of the Nazi regime. The 42 books describing this trial are known as the "blue" series and will eventually appear in their totality on this web page. Currently Volumes One, Two, Three and Four are online.
