Paula MERMELSTEIN was born on January 10, 1934, in Antwerp; her brother Marcel was born there on January 14, 1937. They were two of the 44 children from Izieu. The family lived in Antwerp, then in Borgerhout, from which they left for France on May 14, 1940, when the Germans invaded Belgium. They were interned in Rivesaltes on June 28, 1942. The father, Max Mermelstein, joined the Resistance; his wife, Frieda, lived in southwestern France. The children were taken in at Izieu in 1943. After their arrest, Frieda was arrested at Pau, perhaps because her address was found in Izieu. So she rejoined her children, but at Drancy. All three were deported to Auschwitz on convoy 74 of May 20, 1944, where they were murdered.
