Jacqueline ZEMELMAN was born on June 30, 1935,
in Paris. She was arrested in Paris with her mother, Gusta, during the Vel
d'Hiv roundup, at their home at 3 rue Matre Albert (5th arr.). Her
mother was deported on convoy 14 and Jacqueline on
convoy 20 of August 17, 1942. On August 1,
48 hours before her deportation, Gusta wrote: It has already been two weeks
since we left our house and who will believe such a terrible thing would befall
us. We have been in the Velodrome d'Hiver and now they are sending us to Poland
or Germany. They say the children will be placed with their French relatives,
so I gave the address of my sister-in-law Simone to take her even though both
Jacqueline and I do not want to be separated, because we have become too
attached to one another since they took our husband, our things, and now this.
What a broken life. We are more wretched than dogs. Your sister is with us
because Maman and Papa left yesterday. They undress us and since we're leaving
we aren't allowed to take anything at all, not one cent, no jewelry, no things.
I've gone completely white. We can't even see because they even take away our
glasses. Perhaps one day we will return to our house but for the moment things
are very sad and we are suffering greatly.... I don't know how I will survive
the moment of separation from my child.. . |
