stories about Jews throughout the world, thus
stirring up hatred against them. Kiesinger would later protest that he did not
know what was happening to the Jews in the extermination camps, but that is not
true. As a director of Interradio he got daily and weekly "secret" bulletins
containing all the information his department had gathered. Kiesinger was as
well supplied with data on the actual extermination as he had been with
information on the preparations for it. The German diplomatic service kept the
Foreign Ministry's broadcasting department informed on all "special measures"
against the Jews in occupied countries.
And also, starting in January
1942, Kiesinger could read or listen to Thomas Mann's desperate appeals to the
German people over the BBC:
January 1942. This news will seem
incredible, but my source for it is reliable. Four hundred young Dutch Jews
have been deported to Germany, where they were subjected to experiments with
poisonous gases. The deadly nature of this essentially Germanic weapon of war,
a veritable sword of Siegfried, has been demonstrated on these young men of an
inferior race. They are dead . . . victims of the new order and the warlike
ingenuity of the master race. For such a vicious purpose they were barely good
enough. They were, you see, Jews.... September 1942. The passion for
torturing them has not abated. At this very minute it has reached a peak with
the insane decision to utterly eradicate Europe's entire Jewish population.
When Kiesinger was a witness at the 1968 trial of two Nazi
diplomats, Adolf Beckerle and Fritz von Hahn, all he said about his knowledge
of the fate of the Jews was that in 1944 he suspected that "there was something
more than mere evacuation going on."
The Final Solution the
physical extermination of the Jews was fully known to the Foreign
Ministry's propaganda department. The only proof necessary is a document from
the Krummhübel conference that Ribbentrop organized for April 3 and 4,
1944, which brought together authorities on the Jewish problem from German
embassies in Europe and Foreign Ministry authorities on propaganda, including,
apparently, Kiesinger's broadcasting department. In his report to the
conference, Eberhard von Thadden, the Foreign Ministry diplomat assigned to the
Jewish problem, stated that the duty of foreign propaganda on the Jewish
problem was "to prepare people everywhere to understand the measures our
leaders are taking against the Jews."
Franz Six states: "The part Jews
have played in European life
