In November 1944, Goebbels enthusiastically
endorsed Hans Fritzsche's proposal to bring Kiesinger into the Information
Ministry and give him an important position. Kiesinger was one of the principal
Nazi executives of whom it can be said with absolute certainty that he knew the
whole truth about the sufferings and the annihilation of the Jews. He did not
resist it actively, or even passively by resigning his incriminating position.
Although he knew the truth, he continued to spread anti Semitic propaganda
throughout the world by the craftiest and most effective means. There were, to
my mind, few men in Germany whose moral responsibility was so involved.
You may ask whether the sadistic executioners of Auschwitz were not
worse than Kiesinger. My answer is that a man who aroused sadism in others, and
who spread slanders about a people whose extermination he had sworn to
accomplish, was a major participant in a major crime.
In May 1945,
Kiesinger was imprisoned by the American forces. After seventeen months he was
freed and denazified by a commission, of which his father-in-law was a member,
which nonetheless classified him as a Nazi unfit to hold government office.
When Kiesinger decided to enter politics he had to be examined once more by his
father-in-law. This time he was classified as one of the least important Nazis.
His denazification papers have, luckily for him, vanished since then.
I
am sure that Kiesinger has not merely changed his colors or become a Christian
Democrat without reservations. The fall of the Third Reich was too complete for
anyone now to profess sympathy for Hitler. There are many German citizens,
however, who retain a conviction that their national superiority as a people
imposes on them the obligation to form a Europe totally dedicated to the spread
of German civilization. They believe that to accomplish that they must first
and foremost stimulate a recognition among the German people of their
superiority and preserve and nourish their purity. Their primary objective is
to make Germany a power in European politics, from which position she can
proceed to realize her destiny.
