He has claimed he became a member of the Nazi Party because be hoped, like many other Catholics, to work from within the movement toward the Christian ideal. He has said that after the bloody purge of the Brownshirts in 1934 he became aware of the true nature of Nazism and severed his connection with it. He has specifically stated that he was only a low ranking scientific aide in the Foreign Ministry and had no real responsibility.

None of those assertions has stood up against a thorough examination of the facts.
