Bridge destroyed - at least 11 killed, 40 wounded

Varvarin, May 30 (Tanjug) - At least 11 persons were killed in the air assault launched by NATO aircraft on the bridge in the town of Varvarin, central Serbia, Sunday, but it is feared that the death toll of the criminal attack is even higher.

NATO aircraft targeted the bridge twice shortly after 1 p.m. local time with three projectiles.

At the time of the attack, there were a lot of people and many cars on the bridge, so that there are also many wounded. It is not yet possible to establish the number of the casualties.

The bridge across the Velika Morava was destroyed in the attack. Several cars fell into the river. Civil defense rescue crews are searching the river waters in fifty or so boats.

It was the first attack on Varvarin, where Sunday is a market day. There were even more people in the streets than is usual on a market day due to Pentecost.

Due to the attack, the Varvarin municipality was left without electricity and telephone links. Even cellular phones went dead. Local medical workers are seeing to the large number of wounded.

Officials of the Rasina district, of which Varvarin is a part, have visited the scene of the attack, in which the Hotel Plaza, a church, and the Municipal Assembly building also suffered heavy damages.
