industry were not able to meet the increasing rearmament requirements. 8. As I remember, WIFO had only shadow factories producing raw materials or preliminary products for immediate Wehrmacht requirements, such as concentrated nitric acid and toluene for powder and explosives works. Wehrmacht goods themselves, such as explosives, were produced in shadow factories which did not belong to WIFO but to other Reich-owned companies (such as Montan G.m.b.H.), which were subordinated to the Ordnance Office.¹ Sparte I of Farben had little or nothing to do with the shadow factories or stand-by plants of Montan G.m.b.H.; for example, in the fields of diglycol, stabilizers, pentaerythrite as well as powder, explosives, and poison gas, since these products did not belong to the sphere of Sparte I — which included nitrogen, methanol, gasoline, et cetera — but belonged to other Sparten of Farben.

DR. HELLMUTH DIX (counsel for defendant Schneider) In this affidavit with which we are now dealing,³ you make statements regarding so-called stand-by or “shadow” factories, which were the property of the WIFO, and for which WIFO made contracts with the IG for renting or managing. In that connection, let me ask you, is it not true that other firms also entered into similar contracts with the WIFO?

WITNESS DIERMANN: Yes, certainly.

Q. Could you please name some?

A. When building stand-by plants, the WIFO selected the firms which seemed to them to be best acquainted with that type of production and would be best fitted to build such plants. They some- […times]
