Joint Chiefs of Staff.

KDOM
Kosovo Diplomatic Observer Mission. A mission formed from diplomatic representatives of the United States, Russia, Canada and several EU countries to collect and distribute information on the humanitarian situation in Kosovo.

KLA
The Kosovo Liberation Army. The KLA is also known by it Albanian acronym, UCK.

KVCC
Kosovo Verification Coordination Centre.

KVM
Kosovo Verification Mission. OSCE-run land-based mission. See also AVM.

LDK
Lidhja Demokratike e Kosovës. The Democratic League of Kosovo -- Ibrahim Rugova's political movement. Moderate, nonviolent Kosovar Albanian party.

MSF
Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders). A humanitarian aid organisation that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 80 countries. Kosovo.

MUP
Military Uniformed Police. The Serbian forces currently active in Kosovo.

- N -

NAC
North Atlantic Council. This body has effective political authority and powers of decision and consists of PERM REPs of all member countries meeting together at least once a week. The Council also meets at higher levels involving Foreign Ministers or Heads of Government but it has the same authority and powers of decision-making, and its decisions have the same status and validity, at whatever level it meets.

NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington on 4 April 1949, creating an alliance of 12 independent nations committed to each other's defense. Four more European nations later acceded to the Treaty between 1952 and 1982.

OSCE Office of Democracy and Human Rights.
OSCE
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Poland is current in the chair of the OSCE, an organization of 55 states from Ireland and Albania to Uzbekistan. The membership of the FRY has been suspended. Formerly CSCE.

OTAN
Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique Nord. French abbreviation for NATO.

PERM REP
Permanent Representative to the NAC.

PFP/PfP
Partnership for Peace. The 27 members of the PFP program work in cooperation with NATO toward the common goal of stabilization through joint military exercises and conferences on civilian control of the military. Membership: Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
