SACEUR
Supreme Allied Commander Europe. The commander of NATO's ACE. His headquarters are SHAPE. The SACEUR U.S. Army general. His counterpart is the SACLANT.

SACLANT
Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic. The commander of NATO's ACLANT. His counterpart is the SACEUR. The SACLANT is a U.S. Marine Corps general. He is nominated by the President of the United States and approved by the North Atlantic Council, NATO's highest governing body. He receives his direction from the NATO Military Committee. The Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic is a British Navy vice admiral.

SFOR
Stabilization Force. The multi-national force currently in Bosnia.

SHAPE
Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. Located near Mons in Belgium, about 55 kilometres south west of Brussels. It Commander is the SACEUR whose international staff advise NATO HQ in Brussels on military matters and oversee all aspects of ACE. SACEUR and SHAPE are unique because unlike earlier Supreme Commanders - Foch, Eisenhower (during II World War II), Mountbatten and MacArthur - and their staffs, SHAPE is the first international military HQ to have been established and maintained in peace rather than wartime to deter hostilities, plan and, if necessary, conduct military operations on behalf of the allies. The SACEUR is NATO's senior military commander in Europe.


SHAPE is primarily responsible for co-ordinating the defence a vast area - about 2 million square kilometres of land and 3 million square kilometres of sea which stretches from Norway in Northern Europe to the Mediterranean in the south, and from the Atlantic in the west to the Caucasus mountains in Turkey in the east.

UNPROFOR
United Nations Protection Force.

UNSC
United Nations Security Council.

UNHCR
United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees. The UN organization tasked with refugee relief efforts.

UNPREDEP
UN Preventive Deployment. The FYROM-based force whose mission is to prevent the Balkan conflict from spilling into that country.

Western European Union.

Washington Treaty
The treaty establishing NATO, signed in Washington, D.C., in 1949.

XFOR
NATO Extraction Force. This force, stationed in FYROM, provides the capability for an extraction mission of OSCE observers in Kosovo should such be necessary.
